Engineering and Prototyping Task Light Development

Newhouse Design, Cascade Engineering and Herman Miller had some big aspirations for the sleek Flute Light. The design brief required not only a minimal use of desk space, but also a minimal carbon footprint. Everything about this ultra lightweight, high quality product was designed with those goals in mind.

Because we have a wide range of expertise and we don't hold loyalty to any specific type of manufacturing, we were able to freely design Flute with minimal manufacturing constraints. Using a combination of metal tubing, bent sheet metal, injection molded plastic, and more, we were able to achieve our client's design goals and stay within their budget.

Manufactured in the U.S. from 37% recycled material, Flute consumes 30 to 50+% less energy than traditional task lights and has a 24 year life span with regular use. It uses only 4.7 watts of energy to provide 48 lumens per watt and has a life span of more than 60,000 hours (24 years with average use). At the end of its useful life, it is 85% recyclable.

“I have enjoyed developing several of my product design concepts with Broadview. The Broadview team has a sensitivity to industrial design and aesthetics that many product development and engineering firms lack. They move quickly, and know when to push back; to strike a balance of beauty and functionality.”
